Where Have All the Debbies Gone?

I read this tidbit in a magazine recently...and I wanted to share it..I have a particular interest in it :-)

We're watiting for somebody, anybody, at least one new mother to name her baby Debbie. There hasn't been a baby shower held for a Debbie since Mamie Eisenhower was hosting teas in the White House. The same goes for Nancy, Barbara, Sandra and Linda, names that are now code for "women of a certain age."

You can't even try to lie about your age if you're a Debbie. Bartenders won't card you if you're a Sandra. Walk around a convention sporting a Linda name tag, and you'll find yourself labled as someone who wore madras, ironed her hair and remembers all the moves of the hully gully.

Once Love Story came into our lives and a pale, beautiful, hospitalized Ali MacGraw instructed Ryan O'Neal to hold her ("No Oliver, really hold me"), a rash of Jennifers were born, followed by an entire generation of Kimberlys, Melissas and Heathers.

Isn't it time for a Linda-Nancy-Debbie (and I might add Sandra) comeback? These are names that conjure up images of "solid yet pert," "sassy girl detective" and future bra burner." Reliable, bighearted names. The next time you run into a pregnant women, you might want to drop some hints, start a revival.

As for all you in-vogue Ashleys, Sophias and Emilys, enjoy your day in the sun. But don't forget your sunblock, sweethearts, because someday you'll be out of date too.

written by Linda Yellin and published in "More" magazine, a magazine for us girls over "40", so pass this around to all those pregnant women and lets get a revival going! And no offense to my friends who are Ashleys, Sophias and Emilys...I love you girls!
